Plumbers in Davie, Florida, Explain Repiping a House

Davie, United States - July 21, 2023 / C & D Plumbing Inc. /

When Should a Homeowner Consider Repiping Services?

If a homeowner is at the end of their rope regarding clogs, leaks, and low water pressure, they should consider repiping some parts of the plumbing system. While repiping is a serious process, it can work wonders when saving time, money, and water.

There’s Always a Leaking Pipe

It’s not uncommon for an appliance to leak from time to time. Yet, if leaks become a frequent occurrence, it could mean that many pipes may need modifications or replacing. Some reasons for leaks include:

  • Corrosion. Over time, corrosion can eat away at a metal pipe, increasing the likelihood of leaks.
  • Wear and tear. Water flow can erode a pipe’s interior, compromising its structural integrity.
  • Weak pipe joints. High water pressure can sometimes wear down a joint that connects two pipes. The sediment in hard water doesn’t help, either.
  • Incorrect pipe sizing. A plumber may choose a pipe that’s slightly too small. At first, this might not cause an issue. Yet, with time, homeowners will inevitably experience leaks and the headaches that come with them.

Leaks do not get better with time. If anything, they can lead to secondary problems, like mold and mildew growth. If a homeowner suspects they leak, they should consult a professional immediately. Waiting too long could only worsen the damage.

There’s Poor Water Pressure

showerMost of the time, clogs cause low water pressure. However, other reasons that may require repiping include:

  • Faulty pressure regulators. This component controls the water pressure that comes from the water main. If it malfunctions or needs replacing, it can cause low water pressure.
  • Leaks. As the name suggests, water pressure relies on pressurized water. This isn’t possible when there’s a leak.
  • Malfunctioning water softeners. These devices remove calcium and other substances that can cause hard water. If these appliances need replacing, it can affect how water moves through the plumbing system.

Another reason for poor water pressure includes partially opened valves. If a valve isn’t all the way open, this can impede the water’s flow.

The Color or Smell of the Water Has Changed (for the Worse)

sinkThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that homeowners should remain vigilant for changes in their water’s taste, texture, or color. Even a slight tinge to the water could indicate a septic leak or another health-threatening issue.

One should rely on bottled water and call a professional if they notice:

  • Strong smells. Water shouldn’t smell like anything. If it smells like a swimming pool, this could mean there’s too much chlorine in the plumbing system. The smell of rotting eggs could point to excessive hydrogen sulfide.
  • Discoloration. Brown water could mean anything from a rusted pipe to contamination. Either way, it’s not safe to drink.
  • A metallic taste. Some metals can seep into the water supply and cause health complications. For instance, lead exposure could cause vomiting, nausea, and even death.
